Here at MICROCOPY it is our mission to
provide a strong sense of satisfaction to each of our
customers by offering truly innovative, effective,
high-value products. This, combined with a courteous
and responsive customer service team, is what keeps our
loyal customers coming back and what inspires them to spread
the word about our products to their peers.
MICROCOPY has been in the business of
serving the dental community for over 40 years. It all
started in 1970 when Thom Maass graduated from college and
his father Tom Maass Sr. retired from the Air Force and both
of them discussed starting a business together.
In 1971 they got their start with the purchase of a patent
and the introduction of the world’s finest rapid dental
x-ray solutions. (In fact, this is where we got our
decidedly “non-dental” name of Microcopy. We
originally purchased patents for both the x-ray solution and
for a process to copy engineering drawings.)
INSTA-NEG® and INSTA-FIX® brought not only amazing speed,
but also a high level of diagnostic quality that equaled the
conventional, slow processing chemistry in use at the time.
It was tough going at first with father and son doing both
the sales work and the chemical mixing themselves. Soon
they were able to add a few key employees and Thom’s wife
Martha joined the company as Corporate Secretary and Office
Manager. Additional X-ray related products were soon
introduced including our own patented INSTA-VELOPER®
Portable Darkroom for chairside processing in seconds.
We also introduced FLAPS® Film Tabs – soft foam film
positioning tabs and TROLLMOUNTS – a superior film mounting
system. At this point MICROCOPY had carved out a nice
niche business within the dental X-ray field and the future
looked quite promising. But with the growth came the
realization that much of their sales were from the eastern
half of the country and they were also running out of
factory space.
In 1986 MICROCOPY left their undersized
factory in Newbury Park, California and opened a brand new
facility in Kennesaw, Georgia. At 26 miles north of
Atlanta, Kennesaw was a small, country town that was ideal
for servicing their growing world-wide customer base.
It is all grown up now of course, complete with
subdivisions, thriving businesses and more than its share of
traffic.
In 1989, MICROCOPY, in an effort to
diversify, introduced to the US dental market NEODIAMONDS®,
which are now the world’s largest selling, highest quality, single-patient-use diamonds.
At the time we introduced NEODIAMONDS® we were truly
pioneers. Suggesting that dentists switch from using a
diamond over and over - sterilizing it after each use and
keeping up with it, to our concept of using it once wasn’t
an easy sell at first. The benefits were huge to the
practicing dentist, but for a small company with no outside
sales force this educational process was quite a challenge.
Still, growth was steady over
the next several years and we really started to make a name
for ourselves. Things really took off in September of
2001 when dentistry’s most respected independent research
organization recommended the concept of single-patient use
diamonds. Things haven’t been the same since, with
sales of our highest rated NEODIAMONDS® going through the
roof and winning many recommendations and
other recognitions as well.
In 2002 Perry L Parke joined MICROCOPY
as General Manager. With a strong background in
Manufacturing Management and Quality he quickly became a
highly valued asset to the company and soon afterwards
secured ownership in the company and was made Vice
President.
In 2003, after years of requests from
our customers, MICROCOPY decided to enter the carbide bur
market. We then introduced the popular NEOBURR® brand
of carbides based on the same low cost, high-value model as our NEODIAMONDS®.
In 2005 MICROCOPY introduced the
premier saliva absorbent product on the market to date,
NEODRYS®. With its “ouchless-comfort
edge” design, lower cost, softer materials and size
color-coding our new NEODRYS® saliva absorbents have become
a huge hit.
Throughout the last 40 years MICROCOPY
has held to certain core values that have made all the
difference for us. We are a decidedly
controlled-growth company that only moves ahead on a new
product when we feel we are ready. Unlike so many
others we don’t try to be all things to all people.
The reason we still have a small-company feel is simple;
we’re still a small company. When you call us it’s a
real person that answers the phone, (one of our local
Georgia Peaches actually!). There are no buttons to push, no
sleepy music, just real people who value your time.
Our web site is designed the same way, to respect you and
your time. We still believe in “value” and want to
offer to our customers the concept of value. We want
each customer to feel that they definitely receive their
money’s worth. It is this belief, our commitment to
quality products and superior service, and the dedication of
our employees that have established MICROCOPY as a name well
known for its service to the dental community.
When we made the decision
to introduce a line of single-patient use diamonds, the most
critical issue we had to face was that we were not willing
to just introduce a line of “cheap” diamonds. That
would have been the easy thing to do, find a supplier to
provide a substandard product and sell it at a low price.
We instead made a decision from the start that our diamonds
would be of the very highest quality. We carved our
own market niche by introducing the highest quality cutting
instrument and selling it at the lowest possible price.
We knew there would be others that could duplicate our
pricing; we knew that others would attempt to duplicate our
quality, but we also knew there would be few, if any, who
could offer both. Using only the
finest Swiss-made shanks, and the best natural diamond grit,
we electroplate the grit to the shanks with
computer-controlled consistency in a modern 30,000
square foot facility. All diamonds go through very
thorough performance and inspection procedures that includes
dimensional gauging, grit dispersion inspection and a host
of other measurements to insure consistency of quality prior
to packaging. After packaging, (performed under strict
FDA guidelines), the diamonds are sent out for
gamma-radiation sterilization, and then returned to our
warehouse for shipment to our customers.
